Self-Ligating Braces Q & A

What makes self-ligating braces unique?

Self-ligating braces are orthodontic appliances bonded to the front surfaces of your permanent teeth. They use small fixtures, called brackets, and a metal archwire to place mild pressure on your teeth and jaw, moving them into the proper position.

Traditional metal braces used elastic bands (o-rings) to secure the archwire to the brackets. Self-ligating braces are different in that the archwire is built into the brackets. That makes treatment faster, more comfortable, and less noticeable.

Ensley Orthodontics uses self-ligating braces with brackets manufactured by Pitts 21.

What are the benefits of self-ligating braces?

Self-ligating braces offer various benefits compared to traditional metal braces, including:

Shorter orthodontist visits

Adjusting self-ligating braces is a quick outpatient process that takes 10-15 minutes. Your orthodontist uses a handheld tool instead of replacing your rubber bands one by one (like they would for traditional braces).

Easier cleaning

The small rubber bands used with traditional braces are notorious for trapping food particles and plaque. Since self-ligating braces don’t use rubber bands, they’re easier to keep clean.

Less discomfort

Self-ligating brackets aren’t as sharp or bulky as those used with traditional metal braces. Pitts 21 brackets have smooth rounded edges and corners. They won’t irritate your gums or lips and are incredibly easy to care for.

After an oral exam and a discussion of your goals, your Ensley Orthodontics provider can develop a personalized treatment plan.

How long does treatment with self-ligating braces take?

The amount of time that treatment with self-ligating braces takes depends on the alignment issues addressed and your commitment to your orthodontist’s care plan. Most people achieve their desired results within 12-18 months*, but it may take longer.

To ensure a positive outcome, attend each of your scheduled appointments and follow your provider’s instructions.

Are self-ligating braces painful?

Self-ligating braces are safe and usually well-tolerated. After each checkup, it’s normal to experience mild soreness and increased tooth sensitivity. If necessary, you can take anti-inflammatory medication or place an ice pack on your cheek for relief.
